On behalf of those trapped in the building collapse in Lagos, Nigerians will be staging a walk in Portharcourt to compel the government of Rivers State to act urgently in the rescue operation which has been slow.
According to Dr Chi Ihionu, who has been speaking out against this unfortunate behaviour towards the rescue operations, the walk aims to serve as a call to action. The Walk will begin at 7am on Thursday 29th November starting from the site in Woji GRA Port Harcourt.
Her cousin is also trapped in the building.
Her message to the public is stated below
We are grateful for the love and compassion you have shown us since the news of this disaster broke.
We are also grateful to all the companies and their staff, NGOs (including Rotary International and Nigerian Red cross), Government agencies and the Volunteers who have deployed their machines and remained a part of this Rescue operations so far.
Early this morning, a voice was heard singing and praising God within the ruins of the collapsed 7- storey hotel complex at Woji GRA Port Harcourt. Upon investigation a young man was found underground wedged between two walls. Efforts were made and he was rescued alive albeit very weak ! This is proof that hope must not be lost. If this victim could still praise God in his misfortune, shall we then give up on the others so soon?
A second person was also found, unfortunately he was dead.
It is four days today that our brother #IhionuEkeneMorgan and many others were trapped when a 7-storey hotel complex under construction collapsed at about 4.35pm on Friday 23rd November 2018. These are hardworking Nigerians who left their homes that faithful morning to source a decent living for themselves and their families.
Most of them are Architects, Engineers, Suppliers of building materials, Food vendors, Artisans, Masons, Brick layers, Plumbers and even Recharge card sellers. These are fathers, mothers, children, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts of fellow Nigerians, even friends and people of goodwill who entered this hotel complex to admire ‘this structure’. It could just have been anyone’s lot.
We can no longer continue to leave the faith of #IhionuEkeneMorgan and the other victims to chance. Time really, is of the essence NOW. This is a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent action by all, if the trapped are still to be rescued alive.
It is time to insist our Government declares a state of emergency on this rescue operation and accords it the urgency and expertise it demands.
It is time to insist multinational companies operating in Rivers State consider their involvement in this rescue operation a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.
It is time to insist Equipment Leasing companies in Port Harcourt get fully involved in this operations by deploying the requisite equipment and expertise to the site without seeking payment from the government.
IT IS TIME TO SHOW THAT HUMANITY STILL LIVES IN NIGERIA.
Therefore we implore all Nigerians to join us on a Peace Walk to the Rivers State Government House, to make further urgent appeal for the lives of the victims.
