Every week,at least a pedestrian is knockdown either at the Junction Bus stop or the 7/8 bus stop on the ever busy MuritalaMohammed international airport road. I witnessed one yesterday, when a blind pedestrian was knock down at Junction Bus Stop, while trying to cross the road .The scenario was gory.
I am told that other bus stops on this road i e. Stop Over, Carwash,Nacho are not exempted from this weekly spilling of blood via avoidable road accidents. .From my enquiry, the spate of these horrible knockdowns increased following the rushed eye-service rehabilitation of the road which entailed the pulling down of the then only existing pedestrian bridge in front of Ezego /Ibis Royal section of the road. Pedestrians who would have used the pedestrian bridge are thus forced to cross the Express road at the risk of their lives. There are no warning signs to motorists. There are no speed bumps to ensure vehicles reduce their speed. Zebra crossing nko?Mba!
Whereas the former admistration quickly commissioned this rehabilitated road, the spate of work on the gangatuan white elephant project -looking new pedestrian bridge(two or three floors foot bridge) is nothing to write home about. And so pedestrians are crushed weekly due to this negligence of government.
With due respect, it is very irresponsible of whatever government agency to have commissioned this rehabilated road without any provision or due regard for the life and safety of the pedestrians. It is obvious that the government has little or no value for human life, particularly that of the pedestrian .
I call on the FRSC/LASTMA and other relevant agencies to immediately draft their men to these bustops and help curtail the wastage of human lives through these needless and avoidable knockdowns. The relevant agencies should do the needful. No life is less important than the other.
