The Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, a well-known monthly boxing competition in Nigeria, has changed its name to the Boxing & Mixed Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Besides its regular monthly boxing tournament, which took place on Sunday at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the event also featured its first amateur mixed martial arts competition, which was organized by the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts.Fighting for a spot on the first national Nigerian MMA team to compete in the 13th African Games in Ghana next month was the focus of the tournament, which included the GAMMA Nigeria Open National MMA Championship.The organizers claim that the introduction of mixed martial arts (MMA) coincides with a historic occasion as Nigeria will be proudly represented in ten weight divisions, with six reserved for men and four for women. MMA will be featured in the Olympics for the first time.During the competition, sixty fighters competed in boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). The Lagos State Boxing Association and the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts in Nigeria oversaw and officiated the matches.”It is an evolution because, in addition to boxing, we now have mixed martial arts, and that is just a sign of the times. This is another Boxing Hall of Fame occasion. For us, things are progressing; what counts is that young Nigerians are provided with the chance to train, feel safe and secure, and hone their abilities. to be given the opportunity to truly shine and represent Nigeria honorably both as amateurs and as professionals on the international scene.Valentine Moral, the President of GAMMA Nigeria, praised the organizers and voiced hope for the future of sports in Nigeria.The whole continent of Africa, including Nigeria, has a huge opportunity for mixed martial arts. For the officials and athletes, it is a huge bonus that we are going to Ghana not just to demonstrate but also to win the medal table, he added. This is the first time it has been officially held during the African Games.
