The University of Benin’s administration has given its approval for the Student Union Government to be suspended indefinitely.
The university said in a statement released on Monday by Registrar Ademola Bobola that the suspension was related to an attack on Olumide Akpata, the candidate for the Edo State Labour Party, by a few students who were allegedly members of the student union.
The statement also stated that as of Monday, April 29, 2024, the suspension was in place.The statement said, “The report of the panel established to look into the incidents that happened in the University’s Senior Staff Club and Faculty of Law on Friday, April 12, 2024, has been received by the university management.”
“After giving the management’s report careful thought, the vice chancellor has authorized the suspension of the student union at the university.”The pause that is indefinitely, starting on Monday, April 29, 2024, with immediate effect.As a result, by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, all officers of the students’ union are required to turn over all union property that they are in possession of to the Dean of Students’ Affairs.
‘In the interim, a Caretaker Committee composed of representatives of faculties, schools, and institutes has been approved to coordinate students’ activities during the period of suspension.
“It is hereby communicated for the attention of the university community and compliance of the former union officers as appropriate, the aforementioned directive of the Vice Chancellor.”
