The Federal Government announced that automation of passports application process will begin on Monday, January 8, 2024, and Nigerians can apply and complete their passport application process online without human contact.
The announcement was made known by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a recent inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities alongside Comptroller General Wura-Ola Adepoju.
Tunji-Ojo stated that the automated application system was “99% done,” adding that the process would include uploading passport photos and supporting documents.
The minister said his commitment to deliver on President Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda will streamline the process and ensure a “sweet experience” for applicants.
“We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr. President,” Tunji-Ojo said.
“We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum,” the minister said, adding that the new initiative will enhance the security architecture of the country as well as the comfort and convenience of Nigerians.”
He also added that the initiative will improve the country’s security architecture by facilitating the detection of fake passport applications and reducing bottlenecks.
